Turkish universities offer students the chance to gain a unique higher education experience. There are 207 higher education institutions in Turkey, 129 of which are state universities, with 74 being private non-profit institutions and the remaining 4 as vocational schools.

Istanbul

There are several higher education institutions in Istanbul, both public and private. Istanbul University is the oldest public institution founded in 1453 with almost 100,000 students enrolled each year. Also located in the city is Istanbul Technical University, the world’s third oldest university specializing in engineering sciences.

Ankara

Located in the city of Ankara are several universities, Ankara University, which was the first university established after the creation of the Republic of Turkey, founded in 1946. Ankara University holds various faculties, offering courses in a wide variety of subject fields. Other institutions are also located in Ankara such as Bilkent University, TOBB University of Economics and Technology, and the Middle East Technical University.

Languages

University degrees in Turkey are offered in both Turkish and English. If chosen to study in a non-native language, students will be required to provide evidence of their proficiency. If they do not meet the required standards, language courses may be applicable and encouraged to help improve their reading, writing, and speech.

Even when studying in English, learning Turkish is encouraged to ease the process of communicating with locals and other students.

Student Visa

To study in Turkey, students usually need a visa. Individual visa policies vary from one country to another. Students should contact the Turkish Consulate to apply for visas.

Scholarships

The Turkish government grants funding for a limited number of scholarships for international students. Students from any country may apply for scholarships available for the undergraduate and graduate levels, which include the tuition fee, monthly stipends, accommodation, health expenses, transportation, and Turkish Language courses.
